Mexico Travel Warning Map – US State Department

Using the 2017 State Department Mexico travel warning map, we have created alphabetic lists and a map to help you plan, using the latest US. state department travel information.
While most of the northern, sparsely populated states have travel advisories, all the tourist areas have no travel advisories. The only exceptions to this are a couple small tourist areas have some cautions, such as Mazatlan and Acapulco. There are many who think the risk in the areas with travel advisories is overstated including Mexico Mike an American who drives about 3000 miles a year in Mexico to update his road logs.

City Listings for Popular Tourist Destinations

Acapulco- Tourists are asked to exercise a bit of caution as the state of Guerrero does have armed militias setting up roadblocks, but they are reported of no danger to tourists and visitors.
Aguascalientes- No travel warning has been issued.
Cabo San Lucas While there has been an increase in crime throughout Baja, Cabo remains without a major travel warning.
Cancun- There have been reported shootings but tourist areas remain largely without travel warnings
Chichen Itza- No travel warnings have been issued.
Cozumel- No travel warnings have been issued.
Guadalajara- US citizens are asked to avoid areas bordering Michoacán and Zacatecas but no travel warnings remain in effect for resort areas.
Huatulco- No travel warnings have been issued.
Ixtapa- Tourist are asked to exercise a bit of caution as the state of Guerrero does have armed militias setting up roadblocks, but they are reported of no danger to tourists and visitors. Still exercise caution and stay on main roads whenever possible,
La Paz- Despite a reported increase in violence, the area has no travel warnings issued
Lázaro Cardenas- The state of Michoacan has a travel warning issued, though Lázaro Cardenas is still considered safe. Though you should probably fly directly into the area.
Leon- No travel advisory issued.
Manzanillo- US citizens should defer travel to the border region of Colima-Michoacán
MazatlanTravel in Mazatlan should be limited to Zona Dorada, the historic town center, as well as direct routes to and from these locations and the airport.
Merida- No travel advisory has been issued.
Mexico City- No travel advisory has been issued.
Monterrey- It is advised to exercise caution and drive only by day.
Nuevo Vallarta- No travel advisory issued.
Oaxaca No advisories have been issued for US citizens.
Playa del Carmen- No travel advisory has been issued.
Puerto Escondido- No travel advisories have been issued for US citizens though it is recommended to stay within tourist regions.
Puerto Vallarta- No travel advisory has been issued for US citizens, though a warning has been issued for the state of Jalisco.
Riviera Maya- Despite an increase in reported violence between gangs, no advisory has been issued.
San Cristobal de las Casas- No advisories have been issued for US citizens though it is recommended that tourist remains in tourist areas.
San Jose Del Cabo No travel advisory has been issued.
San Miguel de Allende- No travel advisory has been issued.
Tulum: Despite an increase in reported violence between gangs, no advisory has been issued.
Villahermosa- No travel advisory has been issued.
Zihuatanejo- Tourists are asked to exercise a bit of caution as the state of Guerrero does have armed militias setting up roadblocks, but they are reported of no danger to tourists and visitors.

All Large City Listings

Chihuahua City- Travel is not advised in this area.
Ciudad Juarez- Crime remains an issue, travel within this area is not advised.
Matamoros- Crime, especially kidnapping, remains an issue, travel within this area is not advised.
Mexicali- Travel is not advised in this area.
Morelia- Exercise caution and it is advised to fly into Morelia.
Nuevo Laredo- Crime remains an issue, travel within this area is not advised.
Reynosa- Crime remains an issue, travel within this area is not advised.
Saltillo- Due to high rates of crime it is advised not to drive at night nor stay out beyond 11 pm.
San Miguel de Allende- No travel advisory has been issued.
Tampico- Crime remains an issue, travel within this area is not advised.
Tijuana- No advisories have been issued for US citizens though it is recommended that tourist remains in tourist areas.
Torreónf- Travel is not advised in this area.

State Listings

Baja California (north)- Travel is not advised in this area.

Baja California (South)- No travel advisory has been issued.
Campeche- No travel advisory has been issued.
Chiapas- No advisories have been issued for US citizens though it is recommended that tourist remains in tourist areas.
Chihuahua- Crime remains an issue, travel within this area is not advised.
Coahuila- Crime remains an issue, travel within this area is not advised.
Colima: No advisories have been issued for US citizens though it is recommended that tourist remains in tourist areas.
Durango- Travel is not advised in this area.
Estado de Mexico- Avoid traveling on any roads between Huitzilac, Morelos, and Santa Martha, Estado de Mexico, including the Lagunas de Zempoala National Park and surrounding areas.
Guanajuato- No travel advisory has been issued.
Guerrero- No advisory is in effect though tourists are asked to exercise a bit of caution as the state of Guerrero does have armed militias setting up roadblocks, but they are reported of no danger to tourists and visitors.
Hidalgo- No travel advisory has been issued.
Jalisco- U.S. citizens should defer non-essential travel to areas that border the states of Michoacán and Zacatecas because of continued instability
Nayarit- No advisories have been issued for US citizens though it is recommended that tourist remains in tourist areas.
Nuevo Leon- No advisories have been issued for US citizens though it is recommended that tourist remains in tourist areas.
Oaxaca- No advisories have been issued for US citizens though it is recommended that tourist remains in tourist areas.
Puebla- No travel advisory has been issued.
Queretaro- No travel advisory has been issued.
Quintana Roo- Despite an increase in reported violence between gangs, no advisory has been issued.
San Luis Potosi- No advisories have been issued for US citizens though it is recommended that tourist remains in tourist areas.
Sinaloa- Travel is not advised in this area with Mazatlan being an exception for the advisory.
Tabasco- No travel advisory has been issued.
Tamaulipas- Crime, especially kidnapping, remains an issue, travel within this area is not advised.
Tlaxcala- No travel advisory has been issued.
Veracruz- No travel advisory has been issued though tourists should remain in tourist areas and avoid driving at night.
Yucatan- No travel advisory has been issued.
